Cluster leader: Prof. Gearóid Ó Laighin

We focus on six Bioelectronics research themes, which are of national and international importance, where we have or are building significant research strength. These are:
  • Biometrics
  • Cardiovascular Electronics
  • Diagnostic and Therapeutic Engineering for Cancer
  • Neural Engineering
  • Rehabilitation Engineering 
  • Sports & Exercise Engineering

All six research themes draw on the embedded systems design, signal processing, wireless communication, image processing, RF design and power electronics expertise of the NUI Galway Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

The Biometrics research theme has the following research sub-themes:
  • Repeatable biometric signatures for security applications
  • Facial analysis and active appearance modeling
  • Facial expression modeling and analysis
To date there have been 3 PhD and 1 research masters projects completed and 4 peer-reviewed journal papers and 8 international conference papers published on topics associated with this theme. Currently there are 4 PhD students registered for projects associated with this theme.
 
 
Cardiovascular Electronics
The Cardiovascular Electronics research theme has the following research sub-themes:
  • Use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation as a muscle blood pump mechanism in subjects with vascular disease
  • Analysis of blood pressure signals for the diagnosis of Orthostatic Hypotension
  • Wireless powering of pacemaker devices
  • Image processing for cardiac ultrasound
To date there have been 2 PhD and 1 research masters projects completed and 6 peer-reviewed journal papers published on topics associated with this theme. Currently there are 9 PhD students registered for projects associated with this theme.


Diagnostic and Therapeutic Engineering for Cancer
The Diagnostic and Therapeutic Engineering for Cancer research theme has the following research sub-theme:
  • Use of Ultra Wide Band radar for the detection of breast cancer
Currently there are 2 PhD students and one postdoctoral researcher registered for projects associated with this theme.


 
Neural Engineering
The Neural Engineering research theme has the following research sub-themes:

  • Development of DSP algorithms and platforms to support EEG acquisition and analysis for mobile digital health
  • Signal processing and classification algorithms for clinical and non-clinical Brain Computer Interface applications, cognitive degeneration estimation and Neurofeedback applications
  • Advanced image processing for Magnetic Resonance and Diffusion Tensor imaging of the brain
 
 
Rehabilitation Engineering
The Rehabilitation Engineering research theme has the following research sub-themes:
  • Mobility assessment using kinematic sensors
  • Remote monitoring of patients & wearable electronics
  • Home monitoring of the elderly
