The launch of BestNet (Biomedical Engineering Science Training Network), an enterprise-driven network based in the West of Ireland, took place at the Galway Technology Centre recently. In partnership with the NCBES (National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science), NUI Galway, BestNet was formed in 2005 through funding from a Skillnets Development Grant.
Speaking at the launch, NCBES director Terry Smith stated,?This is an important initiative for us at the NCBES. It will provide an opportunity for the centre to link in to industry and involve ourselves in the active development of training programs, receiving feedback directly from industry to allow us to gear the program to meet specific needs.?
The network, which was awarded funding under the Accel Programme (an initiative of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment) to provide local, state-of-the-art R&D training and skills development programmes for companies in the medical devices, biotechnology and biopharma industries.
BestNet currently includes 18 members from multinational industries, SMEs, indigenous industries, external R&D companies, and sub-supply companies, with an emphasis on the biomedical and medical device industries but not restricted to this area.
A key element of the programme is the development and delivery of a Masters in Biomedical Science (via Distance Learning), tailored to industry requirements and reflecting the need for flexible and innovative opportunities for advanced qualifications. In addition other training courses and events will be organized for the network as necessary.
Accel Programme:
